Daniil Medvedev claimed the title of 2023 Qatar ExxonMobil Open after beating Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4 in the final match held at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex on Saturday.
This is the third victory for Medvedev over the two-time Olympic gold medalist, having beaten the 35-year-old first in the Round of 16 at the 2019 Brisbane International and then at last year’s ATP Masters 1000 in Miami.
Having also triumphed in Rotterdam last week, Medvedev is the first player to clinch back-to-back singles titles in the 2023 ATP Tour season. On Monday, the 27-year-old will leapfrog Rafael Nadal to No. 7 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings as a result of his Doha title run.
Despite falling just short of winning his first ATP Tour title since 2019, Murray rose 18 spots to No. 52 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings thanks to his string of marathon wins in Doha. The Briton will look to build on his form next week, when he and Medvedev both join the field at the ATP 500 event in Dubai.
